PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
March 2009
I would like to welcome back returning members and extend a warm welcome to new members.
Although summer tennis seems a long way off, we are looking forward to an exciting season with lots of good tennis, fun socials and seeing all of our members back at the club.
How did we do in 2008? It was a productive and successful season! Goals were set and accomplished such as: Constitution and By-Laws amendment, increased junior membership and summer camp participation, and enhanced relations with NYTA and Toronto City Parks. Club betterments were also accomplished such as: Baseball Safety Net has been re-installed by City Parks to protect DMTC players, court lights replaced, moved the court lights switch outside the electrical room to allow members to play during evening unsupervised hours, fencing enhanced at no cost and garbage pickup more effective, just to name a few.
The Year End GALA was a great success. We also introduced additional club events for the enjoyment of the DMTC members. Our financial assets were increased through membership growth, and in savings and efficiencies through increase use of Emailing and our website on the Internet, the contracting of Club Professional Services under Peter Zak’s management, and wise investment of our cash assets.
Our Ladies A and ICTA C were first in their divisions. Great work by Henny Scherer and Steve Kaji who captained the A & C teams respectively. Our other teams who participated in the leagues also did well.
We are expecting a fun and challenging upcoming season. Please take note of the following items in store for 2009:
1. Shoe tags will be distributed on Opening Day (May 2nd) and can be picked up at the clubhouse thereafter.
2. A suggestion box will be available at the club for your written statement of issues or suggestions.
3. There will be two Saturday Morning Veterans Teams (Mixed & Men’s). DMTC did not participate in the Veterans League last season.
4. Team Captains are needed. Captains must be at the level of the team they will be captaining. Captains will be selected / voted by the team. Please contact our DMTC League and Tournaments Director, Nigel McCLean at 416-540-3010 if interested.
5. Tryouts: 5a) A (ICTA) team – exempt from tryouts
5b) B & C (ICTA) team members with 60% of matches won last year are also exempt from tryouts
5c) tryouts will be held for new members and all other members seeking to move up a level
5d) A & B teams will tryout together
6. Tryouts will be overseen by acting Captains, Club Pro, Tournament Director and an appointed individual with a high level of tennis skills.
7. Club Round Robin will begin in June and run through August.
8. Club Championships will be held Sept. 3rd to Sept. 20th.
We are happy to have Bosco Fernandes returning as Head Pro for another season.
One of our goals this year is to give something back to the members. So watch for some changes at the club which will benefit the DMTC members as a whole.
Kaffeeklatsch will be back again on Tuesdays and Fridays (8:30 AM to noon) for all those interested in casual tennis and social interaction. A Sunday House League will be organized as in past seasons. And, as always, there will be regular supervised (tennis balls provided) playing times in the evenings and on Sunday mornings.
The OTA sponsored Tennis Fair will take place June 20th, 2-4 p.m. Information about format, entry fees, give-aways and sign-up sheets will be posted at our website, www.donmillstennisclub.com and at our clubhouse starting on the Opening Day social. Participation in the Fair is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so sign up as soon as you see the sign-up sheets posted.
Our 2009 Year End GALA will be held October 3rd, Saturday, at Whistler’s. Please mark this date on your calendar. More information will be posted on our website and at the clubhouse.
Take advantage of the “Early Bird” special! Pay only $65 (not $70) if membership application and cheque are received or postmarked on or before April 15, 2009. Membership application forms can be found on our website and at our clubhouse.
I would like to close with this final note:
A big thank you to all of our 2008 Executive members for their hard work, ideas and dedication that continue to make Don Mills Tennis Club one of the best clubs in Toronto. Also a big thank to all our other volunteers who dedicated their time and talent to make a difference in this club. Thank you all for making Don Mills Tennis Club part of your community getaway. I look forward to seeing everyone and to a great and exciting 2009 summer tennis season!!
TENNIS IS NOT JUST A GAME. IT’S A LIFESTYLE.
Although in tennis “love means nothing”,
LET’S DO TENNIS FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME!
See you on the courts soon!
